I was lucky enough to take Going Green Kiddo on a Mommy-Son date last Friday afternoon (after a fun and fabulous ladies’ lunch with my great gal pals/Mommy friends, Amie and Melanie).  The big date afternoon included a trip to see Bob the Builder LIVE!, a singing, dancing, building extravaganza, starring Bob the Builder, Wendy, Scoop, Dizzy, Lofty and Scrambler, Spud, Farmer Pickles, and Mayor Bentley.  (Whew. . .Can I remember all their names?  YES, I can!  Okay, I had to look up a couple. . .)

Now I did ZERO research into the show prior to attending (it’s not like Bob is going to be rated R, so I thought we were fairly safe!).  The plan came to fruition only because the Mabee Center is on our way to school every day and the Kiddo saw the advertisement on their video marquee.  What a surprise to find that the show was one big positive message of caring for the environment and recycling as Bob and his team build the first-ever Recycling Center and Wind Farm in Sunflower Valley.  Bob hammers home the message that “Trash is only trash if you can’t recycle it.”

In all his 2 years and 9 months of wisdom, Kiddo was very excited to tell me that we “cycle” in our garage and juice doesn’t go in the trash (we put all our juice bottles on top of the counter for the couple times a day trek to our “cycle” center in the garage).  It is nice to know that some of my efforts have not been lost on my son!  We had a great time at the show AND he really “got it” and could apply some of it to what we do at home.  These revelations are one of the many things that amaze me about my son and make me so proud!

Going green isn’t just about recycling, of course; but encouraging habits that include taking care of our earth and all the living things on the earth (animals, plants).  So isn’t interesting to find out (I’m doing my research ahead of time now!!) that Sesame Street is hopping on this bandwagon as well!  Elmo’s Green Thumb will be hitting the BOK Center this April and it is all about Elmo’s adventure to take care of his sunflower friend, Sunny.

Thanks to all these kid-friendly, going green events!  I hope there are many more fun and educational Mommy-Son dates (and Mommy-Daughter dates with the arrival of Miss Priss in July!).  Our family really enjoys taking in these events and what a bonus when I can share the info with all you 918 Moms!
