“Honey, there is a river in our yard!” my husband tells me on his immediate return from leaving for work.  This was before 830 in the morning and our yard was already flooded.  A water mane had broken in our front yard, which is on an incline, the water proceeded to flow down our rock wall into our side yard and down a previously installed drain pipe.  However, the damage was done.  Under the flowing water you could see lots of rocks and tree branches that looked like mini tree logs.  Our side yard was no longer a grassy knoll, but a muddy stream.  Honestly, it looked like a tranquil scene from the pages of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

The city came out about 10 to let us know what was going on and that it would be a few hours before anyone came to fix it since there were pipes breaking all over the city.  About 3 in the afternoon the workers came and dug up our front yard.  It took them almost four hours just to locate the broken pipe and more than that to fix.  They promised my husband they would be back the following morning to finish.  They were to fill in the whole and lay some sod; which would actually make our lawn better looking than it was.  One improvement we didn’t want to make on our dime.  Here it is, Friday and my yard still has a giant hole in it.  The good news: we no longer have to worry about the eye sore of a tree trunk in our front yard that we didn’t feel like putting the time or effort into removing ourselves.

I, of course being the mommy and having the lesser of the two incomes, stayed home to be sure the city fixed our “leak” on Monday.  By the time my husband came home I held Hunter to him at arms length and told him to take him, I was done for the day.  Hunter is finally reacting to his incoming teeth.  He is also at that stage where Mommy can’t be more than a couple of inches from him without him feeling abandoned.  It’s not fun for either of us.  Yet, he is a perfect angel when he is at work with me and his friends.  More than half the time he doesn’t even notice I’m not around.  He is the only baby I know who interacts better with adults than children of his own age. I hope this doesn’t affect his friend quantity once he starts daycare.

Today I am at work and my husband is home with our son and our yard still is a big hole.  Earlier this week my husband told me he had off today.  I told him that was great.  He could watch Hunter while I actually got some work done at my job.  Hubby wanted me to stay home, but since I took off Monday and need to make enough money that I don’t put us into debt while I’m visiting my family in MD, I told him I had to work.  He then told me he had too much to do and it would be way too hard with Hunter, he wouldn’t even be able to get his hair cut.  My response, “Welcome to my world.”

Happy Independence Weekend!
